My advice: take the time to look at the Adblock Plus instructions you might be surprised by what you discover. This confusion is primarily because of its design. Regardless, you can now manually remove these ads in a few steps.Ī minor point about Adblock Plus is its sometimes confusing way of presenting extra features that can also be beneficial. They are respectful, don't interfere with content, and are clearly labeled with the word "advertisement" or its equivalent." Of course, these words are highly subjective, which is probably one of the reasons decisions on what makes a committee now makes an acceptable ad. These are described as those that "aren't intrusive or annoying. In the process, it does a great job of not negatively affecting the look and feel of a website.ĭespite its pedigree, one criticism you'll hear most about Adblock Plus is its " acceptable ads (opens in new tab)" policy. After installation, Adblock Plus immediately gets to work and begins blocking and obstructing things you probably won't want to see. Its ease of use and price (free) have made it a winner for many years. If you're looking for an ad blocker that's been around for a while, you can't do much better than Adblock Plus. All rights reserved. It's sometimes difficult to find "extras" Other ad blockers exist, not just for Safari but for Chrome and Firefox too, but nothing works better than Wipr. If you’ve been using Firefox or Chrome, maybe it’s time to give Safari another look. Remember, Wipr is Safari-only, because only Safari has the built-in Content Blocking APIs that give an app like Wipr a way to do the work. If you end up changing your settings for this webpage to disable content blockers (that is, to allow ads), that is ok with me as well. The problem occurs at stage 3 because Content Blockers does not appear in the Settings. In fact, it’s a great place to experiment with turning content blockers on and off. The instructions say to 1 go to iPadOS Settings, then 2 select Safari, then 3 select Content Blockers, then 4 choose AdBlock Ultimate. If you use Wipr and turn them off, that’s OK with me.

Note: this very website is supported by ads.

Free and open-source, uBlock Origin promises to be. And from then on, I don’t have to think about it. The first product on the list, uBlock Origin, does a terrific job at blocking malware, web promotions, trackers, and the like. I visit that particular site frequently, so it makes sense that I take a couple of seconds and visit “Settings for This Website…” and indicate that I do not want content blockers on, not on that site I don’t. Here’s how the website looks with Content Blockers off (I have two other Safari Extensions active: Honey, which looks for discount codes, and 1Password, which keeps track of my various website log-ins.)

All you do is turn it on (in Safari’s Preferences) and optionally tell it to automatically update (I recommend you do that). Wipr is super easy to set up, and it has a automatic setter-upper.

Wipr at the Mac App Store Setting up Wipr Get Wipr from the Mac app storeĬlick the picture below to go to Wipr on the Mac App Store. You’ll benefit from ad blocking in almost every case (see below for what to do if it’s not a benefit), so get Wipr. Reader View is still great, especially for longer articles, but it’s not the right choice all the time. You can experiment and see: Click to see the larger version Wipr takes out the ads and preserves the layout and links etc. You might be thinking, “Wait a minute– doesn’t Safari’s Reader View take care of ads?” You’re right, Reader View does… but it also changes the page’s layout, and sometimes leaves out links and videos and other parts of a web page. Check out these before and after screenshots.ĭownloading and rendering ads on a web page takes time, so blocking them has a “speeding things up” effect.
